I worked in journalism for 6 years (and still freelance fairly often). Writers don't write headlines. It's often copy editors who honestly don't know much about sports but read through the article and find catch words or phrases

I write copy and no, I would never allow anyone to overwrite my headline or ever submit something without it.

Not only that, but the headline is almost a verbatim reproduction of the concluding line of the article. So yes, the headline was written by Matt.
