fitness guru question: circuit training vs traditional

I have a buddy who I work out with that likes to do full body workouts a few times a week. His logic is that working out most systems alot will translate more to real world situations than your typical 2 systems a day system (chest/tri, back/bis, ect.)
I much prefer to do circuit training. I love doing PT pyramids/circuit training that use cardio and body weight exercises (pull ups, push ups, sit ups, quarter mile run).
Our conflicts comes because he thinks he will get more "gains" by doing his workouts instead of targeting specific areas. Anyone has insight for him?

He isn't pushing himself very hard if he is doing his entire body a few times a week. Oh he may sweat and feel "a pump" but he isn't forcing growth.

More of a reason to work out solo. Just grab someone when you need a spot.

It depends on what you want. Training the same muscle group several times a week won't really help to gain muscle or strength. It is good at maintanence and cardiovascular work. I do circuits a few times a year just to change my routine and shock my system, but I do t expect gains from it. However, anyone who works out regularly will tell you it really always comes down to diet regardless of what you want to accomplish.
