I like the AR in a gunfight, but for the a brief short range defensive encounter....the 12 gauge reigns supreme.
It is an instant game ender with enough pop behind it that typically the guy on the other end will not get a shot off after being hit with the round.
Also using a slug, anything from the knee up is fatal.....wow.

Not saying the 12 gauge is a pea shooter or anything because it creates some devastating wounds.
But in the same amount of time you can get about 2-3 rounds off with an AR.
I think both are excellent CQB weapons and it really depends on the shooter. For a small female, the AR is easily a better choice though.
