I've never shot anyone in self defense so I don't know if there is any truth to this, but some cops have told me they take your gun and it goes into evidence. Once in evidence its really hard/expensive to get back through the court. I wouldn't use my grandfathers bring back Nazi Luger or an expensive/sentimental gun. I could handle losing a $500 Glock 17 though.
