THe 1987 Fiesta Bowl is the greatest upset in a major championship game in all of sports history.
Miami had outscored their opponents during the season 420-136 en route to a perfect regular season, were ranked #1 on offense (Penn State was like 90th) and were considered the best offense of all time back then.
Penn State barely beat Cincy, Maryland and Boston College...one of their biggest wins was easily destroying Alabama.
Miami scored over 30 points 7 times that season and scored over 21 points in every game.
Penn State held them to 10 points.
That's why he is the GOAT. You give Paterno a month to prepare and he could turn water into wine.

it isn't even close to villanova over georgetown
and although we don't think of it as a big shock today, miami over nebraska in '84 -- the game where tom osborne didn't kick the PAT to take the MNC, but instead moronically went for 2 -- was huge at the time. many people were calling neb tGOAT CFB team, and trotting out the ol' "could they compete in the nfl?" bit

Except that he couldn't beat Bear Bryant no matter how long he had to prepare. Neither Paterno or Ohio State's greatest ever Woody Hayes could beat Bryant. Paterno was 0-4 against the Bear.
