Bass player, when would one want or need to use pedals?

Have a couple buddies that use an Octave pedal from time to time.

I have no experience with them. What would be a good starter model? Depends on what you're trying to do?

I've used a distortion pedal and envelope filter before but otherwise see no need for them for bass.

Don't them for most styles of music.

He's the very reason I bought a bass.

He's an absolute monster. Now go play uncle Walter

It helped keep it interesting when practicing alone. Bass can be boring as hell for beginners.

I live for the Fuzz, my only pedal for my bass right now is the big muff (not the bass one though.) Perfect for stony, sludgy, heavy songs....and Beatles songs too. I just love the way Fuzz bass sounds though.

I have a Black Russian big muff. It's great.

We're not so different, you and I....
I practiced all my pop solos and riffs learning all of whatever and ever, and unauthorized biography.
Favorite song might just have to be "Boxing" from his earlier album, wrote it when he was like 15

for fuzz, there's like 5000 different fuzz pedals. it's about what circuit you like and what you want it to sound like.
pedalsandeffects.com is a site I frequent. juan alderente is someone with a shite ton of knowledge about pedals in general and there's a lot of demos on there that they film.
as far as fuzz goes you have big muff, rat, fuzz face etc... a lot of pedals built today if not most are derivatives from those circuits that the pedal builder has tweaked to do different things.
