It's all about assertive discipline. If you are active in the kids' lives, you will know what punishments will be the most meaningful to them. Also, the delivery method of the punishment is the most important part.
they need to know that they are receiving a disciplinary action, because they made a choice to break a rule, not because you are mad or just being a dick.

This. Each kid is different
My son does best with working towards something. He was having a hard time with realizing he has to try a little in school as a junior. So I told him he can get his permit when he earns it by getting his grades up and keeping them up
