Why don't we list the 1908 National Championship. Coach Wingard went 10-0. Here is the entire story.
Edgar R. Wingard is a former college football head coach. He coached five different teams from 1904 to 1918, including the University of Pittsburgh and Louisiana State University. His career record is 40-10-2. He also served as the head coach of the LSU Tigers baseball team from 1908-1909 and as first basketball coach in the history of LSU Tigers basketball in 1909.
In 1908 he led LSU to a 10-0-0 record. The Tigers were awarded the national championship by the National Championship Foundation, although the school does not officially claim that season as a national championship season.

By the way, the National Championship Foundation awarded LSU that title retroactively.
Personally, I think LSU has a legit claim to that year's title, however, LSU isn't like Alabama and doesn't need to claim everything.

Because we're not Bama or Ole Piss?
That kind of stuff, while historically sort of neat, is really silly to try to "claim" in this day and age.
I'm content "claiming" the two we've got, and the one we're about to get.

Bless your heart. I was a "beast" that year!
Did you know that the LSU regular season scoring record from 1908 still stands to this day?

According to Pete Finney in "The Fighting Tigers" it was indeed a very good team with very good players and that was a legitimate schedule that they rolled through. The problem was players may have been professionals, and not students.
Auburn was awarded the Southern Championship that year even though we beat them because of the allegations of paid players.

I say Harvard was the best that year. First off, the northeast bore the standard for football quality in those days. Harvard was undefeated, they beat Carlisle at Harvard Stadium that year (Jim Thorpe played in that game); their only non-win was a tie against Navy. And they were the only team to beat Yale.
Harvard 1908
LSU 1908
If you look there, I believe that Harvard had a much tougher schedule (and they allowed few points--8--than even LSU.).

Probably for the same reason that the University of the South does not claim one for 1899, and that was arguably the greatest college football team in history. Here is their season record. Pay close attention to November 9-14.
