How will tickets work with driverless cars?

You aren't driving the car, so how could a cop write you a ticket?
Even if you are inebriated, if you aren't driving the car could you get a DWI?
This could apply to any violation. How will all this play out as autonomous vehicles become more coming?
Will you be responsible for your robotomobile's crimes?

I can't wait for fully automated cars.

What ticket are you talking about? The cars won't be breaking any traffic laws so there won't be a ticket to give.

Currently, of you're in the car with the keys in the ignition you can get a dwi. Even if you're passed out and the car is in park

You can get a DWI for just sitting in the drivers seat of a parked car that is not running.....so sure, they will give DWIs to people who are not driving.

This
So a bigger question is what will local and state governments do to replace this income void?

Which is complete and utter bullshite.
It seems it would be self explanatory but you know the gov't isn't just going to give up that revenue stream quietly.

No.

Until they are fully autonomous the driver will always have to exert some level of control and must be alert.

Interesting question. Do you think that law enforcement agencies lobby against these cars and win?

yes, but then you can sue the car manufacturer for defective equipment.

Yes, but they will still conduct checkpoints. The loophole they will use is that you are supposed to be ready to take control of the vehicle at any point in the event of an emergency, and so you are still guilty of a crime. I suspect it will be a reduced penalty, but they will still try to give DWIs. This is a huge source of income for cities and states. They aren't going to give it up without a fight.

Laws may have to be amended to account for robotic malfunction. And, no doubt will favor those giving the tickets. Imagine a data dump of the vehicle's black box to be used in disputes in accident scenarios. Interesting to say the least.

There shouldn't be any tickets

You ever tried telling a cop that you COULDNT have been speeding because cruise control was set on the exact speed limit?
That's about how many fricks a cop will give to a 'driverless' vehicle in operation.

Agreed, traffic tickets are just for revenue. Police should not be policing the road!

Absolutely. Cities and states know that once autonomous cars are fully implemented onto our roads all the revenue from running red lights, speeding, DWIs, and pretty much any other moving violation all goes away. That's alot of revenue. The gubment has always touted safety as their number one concern. Autonomous vehicles would obviously eliminate a major percentage of safety issues on the road and solve alot of other problems at the same time, but it also means giving up a tremendous amount of revenue and potentially reducing the size of your police force. This isn't something most government entities will do without a fight.

Is that really true? I've heard it forever but it's always from some 22 year old with a drinking problem.....never saw a legit source
And it may well be true

Fight it sure, but can they win? There's no real good argument against them.
Posted on 1/11/16 at 7:44 am to fr33manator
Insurance companies will fight tooth and nail to prevent driverless cars along with law enforcement.
