I would imagine the poor kids just really needed to learn basics(reading, etc). Remember he was teaching history. Those children all had parents in service so they likely were thinking "why do I need to learn this if all I'm gonna do is follow in my parent's footsteps?"
Him admitting he was also a service worker made the kids more interested cause he was now seen as "one of them" who was able to rise above his station. Obviously people did rise above their station back then but it likely wasn't something done often, especially in small towns like that.

I think nurse is correct, plus times were changing rapidly at that time. I don't know how long children of the serving classes had been provided any formal schooling at all. Remember that Andrew can't read and Barrow was attempting to teach him. I don't recall if they explained why he couldn't read.
Anyway, they've tied up Mosely's loose end.
I think (and hope) that we'll see Anna and Bates with a child by the end. I think Mary will be pregnant again. I have a feeling Tom may have a larger role than she does in running the place. Wonder if he'll come up with a spouse before it's said and done?
