Because you don't know who the top 2 teams are and you're giving them an advantage unparalleled in any other sport. This isn't the NFL where there's only 1 week off. Here there are 4-5 weeks off and it would create a huge problem. 4 or 8 to me is the only way

The playoff teams (minus Oklahoma) all had less than four weeks off. That extra week didn't benefit Oklahoma. Add another game in there and it becomes less. Keeping a bye for the top two maintains the importance of the entire season.

I like the idea of 6. 5 champs and one wild card, who I would only assume would be Ohio State this year. But then Houston gets left out who I would have been really interested to see how much noise they could have made.

play the playin round a week after conference championships then at the higher rated's school.
