I really don't know what to think. I encounter more and more autistic kids every year. And no, it's got nothing to do with advances in modern diagnosis. The kids are noticeably autistic and there are more of them than there used to be just 20 years ago. I personally know 6 women I went to school with who have autistic kids.
I'm not saying vaccines cause it, but something seems to be.
Improvements in diagnosis may be one thing leading to higher number of children on the spectrum.

I see this regularly now. I even saw it during X-mas while staying at my brother's house. The kid next door kept me awake every other night.
One of the women I know who has an autistic kid also has 4 other kids without autism. She says the only thing she did differently with that kid was the modern vaccine sets.

There are also a lot of kids who are considered "on the spectrum" when a few short years ago they would be considered assholes.
It's much easier for parents to say that little Caedynn is "on the spectrum" that admit that little Caedynn is a jerk.
ETA: having a kid "on the spectrum" can be financially rewarding - those SSI checks get bigger...
