Remember spending the night on the ramp for one of those games. The line went all the way up Nicholson. We had a TV and watched the US hockey team during the day. Beat either the Russians or Sweden.(?) Place was ballistic! USA! USA! Lots of bottles rolling down the ramp!

Yeah those were the days when people/students would camp out for football and basketball games. That hoops game was awesome, packed house and loud. Also it was the USA vs Finland game on ABC at 10am Sunday morning after we had beaten the Russians Friday. Lots of TVs out there and lots of beer/booze. Sorry for partying

Was there...great atmosphere, tough one to lose. Deaf Dome rocked in those days, LSU roundball was an event with Daddy Dale.

For the game you linked wasn't that the only conference game LSU lost that year?

Lost early in conference play, if not first SEC game, to Vanderbilt in Nashville, 77-66. Lost by one at home to Alabama and then one more --I'm thinking in Athens to Georgia.

This 1980 home game vs Kentucky was on a Sunday the same day the US beat Finland. The game vs the Soviets was on Friday and was in the semi-final.

Yup you are correct sir. In fact those 3 losses came in the first 4 SEC games which had us 1-3 to start conference play. Only other loss before that UK game was at #1 DePaul which came as our annual mid season non conference game, which btw JJ is bringing back (see Oklahoma game). That year and the following one I really thought we were gonna win it all.

As you said Tommy, only lost one the next year at Rupp the final game I think when the ref swallowed the whistle on Hi-C going to the goal at the end to tie it.

In the 18 game round robin format the SEC used from the 1966-1967 season through 1990-1991, that team was the only one to start 17-0 and only Kentucky's 1969-1970 and 1985-1986 teams also went 17-1.

And just think, we soundly beat the two teams we lost to in the regular season the other time we played each, Arkansas and Kentucky.

Could we have beaten Indiana had Rudy been healthy? Impossible to say, but we were beating Indiana at half and we did not come out of the locker room at half in time to warm up...at all. That always bothered me and made me wonder what if as much as if Rudy had been healthy. Cause we could not hit the broad side of a barn in the second half.

Frustrating to say the least. I sure hope we win one in my lifetime. Seen 2 in football, 6 in baseball, and 348 in women's track I think Johnny can do it he just needs to find his Tex Winter type assistant. I thought he found him in Musselman, but that proved to be short lived. There has to be one out there, I just wish we could find him

Don't forget Rick Huckaby. He was very instrumental in the success of the teams we're discussing in this thread. As great as Winter was we lost in the first round of the tourney in the only year he was an assistant here.

My perception is CJJ is very hands on. Dale was more than willing to delegate, he had to IMHO because he was so ADHD and so focused on things other than basketball that he just was not capable of grinding out the mundane details that can make a real difference.

So to that point I'm not sure to what extent a guru would make a tremendous difference. I think CJJ would have to change his approach a bit to allow that.

Certainly he could make a decision to do that and I think it would be in his best interest. We shall see.

I stand corrected on Tex. JJ has found his Ron Abernathy/Frank Wilson type in David Patrick. Les and JJ need to both delegate and find coaches who are X and O guys. Hukaby was that guy.

Thanks a lot a-hole. Just finished watching that whole game on Apple TV, picture was horrible btw, but it was from back in the day. Fracking 4 corner stall that led to a jump with Cookie Man and Bowie. Then Kyle F'ing Macy with the buzzer beater. Perfect ending to a crappy weekend.

A simple down-vote will do next time. I said clearly at the beginning and at the end of my post that LSU lost in overtime. This was the only game on YouTube of the 1980 team - my favorite (I also mentioned this in a reply post).

Was just kidding, I was at the game as a 10th grader with my gramps. Once you posted the link it drew me in quick. Was gonna do a drive by, but got sucked into the black hole. I even remembered how it ended and found myself still yelling for Cook to pass the dam ball at the TV lol. And yes I even watched Macy hit the buzzer beater. Good times my friend, the good ole days.

I agree but I also think it's deeper than X's and O's with CJJ. I do think he needs to find away to demand and get more accountability from his players.

He's not a screamer and I don't think one needs to be to be successful. But there does need to be a culture of accountability and I may be off base but my perception is that we need a more sound foundation in that regard.

I truly believe he's getting there. Also I think he needs a true coach or master of the game on his staff, one that doesn't wanna deal with the headaches of recruiting and all the other BS that goes along with being the guy. Someone who just wants to coach the game, who love the specifics of it.

I think CJJ sees Charlie as that guy now. CJJ highly respects Charlie. But a new voice that CJJ will respect and listen to, I agree would help But CJJ has to want and accept that.

And I'd like to see a guy who can be a bit of a heavy too and demand more accountability. I still see that as an important cog CJJ needs to improve upon.
