LSU v. Kentucky BB - Feb. 1980

While this was an overtime loss, LSU gets revenge in the SEC Tournament final that year (the last time they won the SEC tournament). This may have been my favorite LSU BB team all-time. They played very well as a team and were deep. I forgot how good a PG Ethan Martin was but he shows it in this game. The game is also interesting to watch as it was a pre-shot clock, pre-3 point line game. There were a lot of mid-range jumpers and working to get a short open shot. Scales was an incredibly athletic 6'9" forward who could leap and Cook was a very effective, physical 6'9" center. Rick Mattick, a backup 7'0" center played briefly. He had a few blocks and was aggressive but was a little slow-footed. Obviously, Macklin, Carter, and Sims were very polished players. This team eventually lost in the Elite 8 to Louisville (the eventual national champs). I don't understand how LSU met them that early as they were both ranked very highly going into the tournament. Must have been more of an emphasis on regional seeding then. Anyway, enjoy the game, just remember LSU lost this one in OT in case that plays a part in whether you want to watch the whole thing. LINK

We also beat them in Lexington earlier in the year so we took 2 of 3 from them that year.

With Scales and Macklin together, may have been a more talented team than the Final Four team the next year, but I think the addition of Swat Mitchell the next year made us a more balanced team and a better defensive team.

Dude totally intimidated Bowie in that SEC Championship game. He had little to no offensive skill but he could D up and brought a toughness we could sure use this year.

I graduated already. I remember beating Kentucky in OT when the five starters fouled out.

Yep, that was undoubtedly the watershed moment for the program. That game propelled LSU to the period of sustained success they would reach under Dale.
It was Dale's 6th season and the first of those 6 they would finish above .500 in SEC play. It generated interest and let us think, maybe.....

Back before every game was televised. I remember I was a senior in high school listening to this game by myself in my room. Kentucky was undefeated and if I remember correctly lost only one other game to Alabama in Tuscaloosa the whole year. They went on to win the national championship. I remember a very popular but seldom used reserve.....I think his name was Floyd Jones had two stick back dunks coming right off the bench. The crowd sounded like it was exploding through the radio speakers.
To the OP did not mean to hijack the thread as the game you referenced was also one of my favorite from that era. This was the first and ONLY time LSU has won the SEC tournament. Dewayne Scales was on fire for that game. Great memories. For the game you linked wasn't that the only conference game LSU lost that year?

Okay just clicked your link and answered my question. Both teams 14-3 in conference. The 17-1 year, only losing to Kentucky in the home finale was 1981. That team went to the final four and lost to eventual champion Indiana.

I was looking for any game that year but this was the only one I found - from a KY fan. When Scales was on, he was elite and a game changer but he was inconsistent and a little bit of a head case if I remember correctly. Rudy was talented and more reliable but he was only 6'7".

Does anyone remember the song they wrote for the team. Played on local radio at the time.

He absolutely went off against Kentucky in the 80 SEC tournament final, our only SEC tourney victory.
Hit about 7 straight shots from the elbow. On fiya.
Did the same earlier that year when we went to play No. 1 DePaul in Chicago. We lost that one at the wire but Scales kept us in it till the end.
He was a bit flakey and inconsistent, but when he was on he was on.

LSU was seeded #1 in the Midwest Region that year. Kentucky, Depaul and Virginia were top seeds in their respective regions that year. Louisville wasn't a #1 seed that year. Kentucky, Depaul, Virginia, and LSU lost before they could go to the Final Four that year. The Final Four was: Louisville, UCLA, Purdue, and Iowa that year. UCLA ended up having to vacate their Final 4 appearance later. Louisville beat them 59-54 in the Championship Game in Indianapolis.

Thanks a lot a-hole. Just finished watching that whole game on Apple TV, picture was horrible btw, but it was from back in the day. Fracking 4 corner stall that led to a jump with Cookie Man and Bowie. Then Kyle F'ing Macy with the buzzer beater. Perfect ending to a crappy weekend.

Yeah, Daddy Dale did have a period where he was in love with that 4 corners. Ticked me off more than once.
Should have just let Ethan keep taking it...he was schooling Kyle Macy all night on both ends of the floor. Macy hits the winning shot and comes out a hero in a game where he was completely outplayed.

Yeah and got put up on there shoulders. PMAC was loud, very loud. Did you watch the link?

No but I remember the game. I couldn't make that one but watched it on t.v. Al Macquire, Bill Packer and Dick Enberg on the call on a Sunday afternoon in Baton Rouge if I recall correctly.
And I seem to recall Al not agreeing with the four corners, saying it was too long to hold the ball. May be wrong there, but Al always said when he won his only title against North Carolina it was because UNC was wearing his team out, Dean went to the four corners and their sweat dried. His team came back took the lead and never looked back.

Nope they were in South Bend for the Notre Dame game. Don Criqui and I forget his color guy. They came on at the very end of the link. The whole game they used the UK network which sucked but interesting if you feel me.
But it was a Sunday
