And I won't ever understand that. I think it was nostalgia from borrowing so many aspects from previous games that makes it so appealing. Hell even the music is recycled from earlier games.

ETA- and I'm not saying I hate the game. I really enjoyed the story, characters and gameplay (minus long waits in battles and trance). I just don't put it close to the top

9 is lauded because it returned to the crystals lore and went back to super-deformed characters and art style. A lot of people saw this as a return to form while keeping the best parts of later entries. The way FF was going after 7 and 8 was more realistic, futuristic/steampunk and they were going towards the more realistic approach on the design and them BAM 9 comes out and it's basically a homage to what FF started as.

Add to the fact it's a great story as well and it's an awesome game.

I don't get why you are saying this? Every Final Fantasy has always borrowed off of others. 9 is just as unique as any other game.

They had a nod to first FF's by having a black mage in it and more cartoonish characters but that is about it.

Nothing about nostalgia is why I like that game. It is just great in almost all factors. Story, World, Characters, Combat System, Ability learning system, Artwork.

The only gripe I really have with the game are the loading times. Also how hard it could be to steal some items.
