what did you have in mind? how long are you staying?
my company is based in LA and i go there 5-6 times a year for the past 4 years. ive brought my wife out for a few long weekends and we've pretty much hit it all.
you need to split it up into segments or sections of LA.
for instance, when my wife came out for the first time, we did a 3 day weekend and on friday did Orange County. stayed on the beach in Huntington Beach(very cool area), they have a great boardwalk and downtown. eat breakfast at the sugar shack FYI.
then we drove around Newport, Laguna, etc. the next day we drove up to LA and hollywood and did the touristy stuff. stayed on hollywood Blvd and got all dressed up and hit the nightlife.
sunday we drove out to the beach in LA and did Venice and Santa Monica pier. it was awesome
LA gets a bad rap, but i personally love the vibe. so much to do, just dont be overwhelmed by the traffic. I personally prefer the OC. its beautiful and has some great restaurants.
a few of my favorite spots in and around LA
Tin Roof Bistro- Manhattan Beach- craft beer and kickass food
Katana Sushi- trendy as shite(you always see it on TMZ), but damn is it good. on sunset strip
the original farmers market- LA- kickass place, TONS of food places

Trying to keep an open mind but need to make a decision on where I'm staying soon. I'll just be staying 2 days at a place of my choice then Friday in the Southbay, then Saturday downtown for a concert at the staples center. I'l be leaving early Sunday afternoon.
