Bottom line, it's nature. Pretty much everywhere else in the animal species, the dominant male gets to go around like a boss with his choice of the female. If the female just went around with anything that walked up (as she could if not for the biological restraints), the rest of the animal populations would end up like ours has.

Nature has always required restraint from women while the men fight it out for who is suitable for her. For all intents and purposes, women have always been the glue that keeps this thing on track.

Not to mention the new male usually kills the previous offspring of the female to ensure that his brood is given the lion's share of the resources

There are lots of different breeding strategies out there in the animal kingdom. Just with the apes, you can look at testicule-body size ratio to get an idea of what the primary mating strategy is. While polygyny (one male, multiple females) is far more common for obvious reasons, polyandry (one female, multiple males) does occur in some species.

Then you have things like the spotted hyena where it is a matriarchal social system. Top woman is a bad bitch that treats subordinate females poorly. So evolution comes along and now females have a pseudopenis to confuse (I guess) the top bitch so they aren't treated as badly.

Also, how many species are out there having sex for pleasure like humans do? Human females also lack HUGELY OBVIOUS outward signs of ovulation which can complicate things.

Meaning what exactly?

while the men fight it out

Is "fighting it out" always a physical confrontation?

But again, you can look at male-female body size ratios to determine how much physical fighting/protection comes into play for mating purposes.

My opinions are here and elsewhere.

Bottom line: The issue comes down to being insecure about paternal parentage.
