Blake Sims stepped up and balled. For 3 years he was a backup QB before finally getting the nod and leading Bama to the playoffs.
Blake Sims was a backup running back.

Passing stats from ESPN and Bama online:
2012 (redshirt soph): 10 games, 5-10 77yards 0td/0int
2013 (redshirt Jr.): 8 games, 18-29, 167 yards 2td/0int
2009 (HS Senior): 150-224, 2288 yards. (rushing 115/865)

Looks like a typical dual threat QB to me coming out of HS. Bama had him at RB for his true freshman and redshirt freshman years, but the whole "he's a running back" theme is way overblown. He played QB in HS and was McCarron's top back up for two years. The real shock was how effective he was when given the chance to start, and a lot of that credit has to go to Kiffin.
