What was wrong with offensive play calling Saturday?

I really didn't see anything wrong with the play-calling Saturday. The running game put up a bunch of yards and many of the passes that Harris missed had open receivers. Bad game for him but it seems the play calling was pretty good.

Nothing was wrong with it. We tried to throw but couldn't hit open receivers, forcing us to rely on the run.

It was great. I especially liked the forced time outs in order to prevent delay of game penalties. We squandered 3 red zone opportunities in the 1st quarter. Great play calling. So great that you can expect the same next year.

Not much.
But we did the same thing last year. Run the same shite all season long, then when we get to TAMU, the last game of the season, we finally see some new wrinkles. Wrinkles that should have been in place all year. Wrinkles that everyone has been calling for. And we will never see them again until TAMU next year.
That's the problem.

Bitching about play-calling is a simpleton view. If you listen to sports radio of just about any team, it seems like the #1 complaint among every fanbase is play-calling.
In the case of Cam, I don't think play-calling has ever been much of an issue. The issue has always been more systemic, with the inability to develop a quarterback and passing game.

People tend to conflate the actual game plan/play selection with the execution of it.
To be sure, both things are the responsibility of the coach in the final analysis.
But I think people just like to use the "too stubborn", "3 yards and a cloud of dust" memes and don't really pay much attention to what caused the problems in given game.

Aside from the fact, say, that we line up in a spread but never run a true spread option from it?
The raison d'etre of that formation and movement is to have the QB read the DE and then give or pull the ball accordingly. But we just hand it to Fournette every time.
We have a dual threat QB not being used as a dual threat QB. Brandon ran the ball only twice for pretty good gains. It was there for the taking all night.
We're so accustomed to crappy offensive playcalling that anything slightly less than crappy makes us all giddy.

I actually thought it was improved in terms of creativity. It seemed to me like we were giving them different looks (bunch formations), and we finally got that Fournette-Guice reverse rolling. I also thought the 3rd down swing pass to Fournette was brilliant. The issue was execution in passing game. I don't think Harris is set up for success at all with our route tree (s) and he played poorly as a result. A&M was clearly selling out to stop the run and we couldn't make them pay. Overall, I thought it was better than our previous three games, but far from encouraging.

He's kept it in other games, with varying success. But I don't think Harris ever executed the zone-read very well.

play calling was fine. we can't run outside of the tackles because the opposing D shuts it down. the reverse was money as their D loaded up on the other side. Guice made Chavis pay for that.
the vast majority of BH's passes were overthrown or thrown behind the receiver (or both). he made Mettenburgers overthrows look mild. maybe the kid can't settle down and needs to learn how to do that. a coach on the sideline could help. hell, saban is always there when his qb goes to the sideline and you can read his lips and body language telling him to settle the frick down.

I watched both Alabama vs. LSU and Alabama vs. LSU....
Now, Auburn didn't set the world on fire on offense versus Alabama, mainly because Johnson is a terrible QB... BUT...
I really can't recall any time when a Bama defensive lineman greeted an Auburn running back in the backfield. Against LSU, on the other hand, they hit Fournette in the backfield no less than 13 times.
Why the big difference? Because Auburn is unpredictable and executes its runs well... they might not have the OL and RB talent to go the distance, but at least they get a decent start.

Agree here...but will say that I'm really surprised LSU didn't look more at Tennessee's game plan against Bama prior to the game. I feel like we play a similar brand of ball with superior talent, and TENN gave Kiffin/Saban fits.
