re: Does UNC deserve a playoff spot if they beat Clemson?

Difficult because we were the only FBS team they played. The basis for me saying that was they are 10-2, and Vegas favorites are pretty closely aligned with Sagarin predictions. Along those lines, NC A&T would be favored against some FBS opponents (including Hawaii).
They are 9-2, and that other loss wasn't to an FBS team, either. You're also turning a blind eye to Delaware.
Posted on 11/30/15 at 4:30 pm to DisplacedBuckeye
Yes, 9-2. Thanks. Not sure why I thought 10.
Not turning a blind eye to Delaware. My argument is there isn't much difference in playing a bottom dweller FBS and FCS school vs. two FCS schools. Both schedules would result in near-automatic wins.

If a team like UNC gets in for essentially 1 big win and a horrible loss, it sets the opposite precedent of what was supposed to happen. If I'm a P-5 school, why schedule hard OOC games?
OOC scheduling could knock out Stanford. I bet they wish they played San Jose State or Cal Davis instead of Northwestern. If you're Stanford or any other P5 team, why schedule a game like that if it can only hurt you?
This is 100% of the problem I'd have with UNC getting in, regardless of what happens Saturday.

Ohio State played zero FCS schools. Scheduling one is bad. Scheduling two is pathetic.

its the principle of scheduling those teams that deserves to be criticized.
no one is going to criticize Ohio State for scheduling Va Tech for example, even though they are crap

As was pointed out earlier, it definitely matters who those teams are. North Dakota State and McNeese State would be less of a negative than NC A&T and Delaware.
If you really want the comparison, here it is:
Virginia Tech (42) - South Carolina (71)
Western Michigan (65) - Illinois (72)
Northern Illinois (70) - NC A&T (154)
Hawaii (166) - Delaware (193)
Notice that every single team Ohio State played OOC, but Hawaii, is ranked ahead of every single team UNC played OOC. UNC also has a loss against that. A win over Clemson brings UNC closer, but they're still a good bit behind.

Because if Stanford only had 1 loss right now, they would be in no danger of being left out. You schedule tough if you expect to be in the race so you don't face the danger of being left out. It works sometimes and falls flat others. Stanford, with 1 loss (and beating Northwestern) may well be the 1 or 2 seed

Well sure, but if Stanford beat San Jose State instead of Northwestern, with one loss to Oregon, they would be in if they win the conference. At the very least it's a debate between Stanford and OU assuming Clemson and Bama win.

Can you imagine this board if Ohio State scheduled two FCS teams?

Hell no they're out of it

OOC sure. If we're really going to compare OSU vs. UNC (should UNC win this weekend) then this would be the more appropriate comparison as UNC will have played one more game:
#1 Clemson------------------------------UNC
#5 MSU----------------OSU
#19 Michigan-----------OSU
#34 Pitt---------------------------------UNC
#42 VT-----------------OSU---------------UNC
#46 Miami--------------------------------UNC
#47 NCSU---------------------------------UNC
#51 PSU----------------OSU
#53 GT-----------------------------------UNC
#57 Duke---------------------------------UNC
#65 Western Michigan---OSU
#66 Minnesota----------OSU
#67 Indiana------------OSU
#70 Northern Illinois--OSU
#71 South Carolina-----------------------UNC
#72 Illinois-----------OSU---------------UNC
#76 Virginia-----------------------------UNC
#85 Maryland-----------OSU
#93 Wake Forest--------------------------UNC
#97 Rutgers------------OSU
#154 NC A&T-------------------------------UNC
#166 Hawaii-------------OSU
or
UNC / OSU
1 > 5
34 < 19
42 = 42
46 > 51
47 > 65
53 > 66
57 > 67
71 < 70
72 = 72
76 > 85
93 > 97
154> 166
Broken down that way....who had the tougher schedule if UNC wins this weekend? They are very similar, but the edge should go to UNC.

Where did you get this data? Is this a hybrid of polls and Sagarin?
Posted on 11/30/15 at 5:37 pm to DisplacedBuckeye
Isn't that the same numbers you posted first for some of those teams?
Posted on 11/30/15 at 5:39 pm to castorinho
Yes, for some of them, hence the hybrid comment. Sagarin has Clemson at #4, not #1, which I happen to agree with.
*edit
I also didn't post them first. I'd be completely happy to leave Sagarin out of it, although he does have Ohio State at #3.

I posted AP poll for top 25 and Sagarin for the rest. Would have used CFP if it was current. Anything else out there besides Sagarin that ranks all teams?

Massey. I don't care what you use, but it needs to be consistent. Each uses different methods to rank teams. Just pick one and use it all the way through.

Should have known.
Any particular system that's more highly regarded than Sagarin's when ranking all?

Probably Massey composite, if we're going with stats nerds and their interpretations of college football.

Had the AP poll gone past 25, I would have.
Thanks for they Massey tip. I'll check it out.
