I love Les Miles. He is a wonderful human being--he is the kind of person I would like to have coaching my son. He is also a very talented football coach. Most of what he does as a coach he does with excellence.
He has, however, reached the pinnacle of what he can accomplish at LSU given his approach to coaching the game. With Coach Miles leading LSU, we will win about 9 or 10 games a year--maybe we'll get 11 wins in some years, and others we'll have 8 wins. Maybe that is OK--after all, winning 9 or 10 games a year is pretty good, and it speaks well of his overall coaching approach. However, we will not regularly compete for national championships with Coach Miles at the helm of this program. He will continue to bring in extraordinary talent but will not get the most out of that talent. LSU will underperform with him as head coach.
It pains me to say this. He is a wonderful man who is perhaps one of the best representatives of LSU we have. But LSU is not playing modern-day football under his direction, and there are gaps in his otherwise-excellent coaching approach. We will continue to be very good while failing to compete regularly for the national championship as long as Coach Miles continues to do what he is doing. Perhaps he can change his approach, but I do not think that the track record suggests that he can. I don't know that I would go so far as to say that the Mack Brown era is upon us, but it is hard to dispute that the program is not on the right track.
