I was really hoping the pilots would be OK.
This entire situation would be easier to diffuse if they were.

There will be no situation. Putin will talk tough, but realizes the Turks gave his pilot plenty of warning.

I ve seen some of the videos and pictures going around... it wont be okay. also read this on reddit, gave a little insight into whos fighting who and how big a cluster frick Syria is
Stop lumping every distinct ethnic/religious/political group together as homogenous "rebels." The Kurds, the Turkmen, ISIS, the jihadists, and the Free Syrian Army have all at various times been vaguely (and lazily) referred to as rebels so that everyone and their mother doesn't have a fricking clue what they're talking about.
The Turkmen in the north are actively fighting against ISIS. Meanwhile, Russia is blindly supporting al-Assad on all fronts, even when that means bombing the exact same groups fighting ISIS.
Over the last few days, Russia has been bombing the shite out of the Turkmen-controlled areas in order to aid the Syrian army. Turkey has warned Russia multiple times to stop bombing its people in Syria (Turkmen are Syrians of Turkish descent and Turkey sees them as the best buffer against the advance of ISIS into its territory). So essentially, Russia bombed Turkey's allies, Turkey said frick off, Russia continued, Russia's plane got shot down. It is totally fricked up that some soldiers shot at a pilot as he was parachuting down. However the circlejerk here on reddit doesn't seem to give a shite that this is a warzone, the pilot was an enemy combatant who had been bombing Turkmen villages, and this is nowhere near the most horrific shite that is happening in this war. Al-Assad used chemical weapons on his own people, ISIS is raping and beheading civilians. Meanwhile, Russia is wasting its time bombing an ethnic group that rightfully opposes both those fronts. Turkey has already taken in 2.2 million refugees from this civil war, and 1,500 new refugees just arrived at the Turkish border due to the Russian airstrikes. I'm all for Russia unleashing hell on ISIS, but they're targeting the wrong people and crying when Turkey calls them out on it.

US just told Turkey "they're on their own":
quote:
"This is an incident between the Russian and the Turkish governments. It is not an issue that involves the combined joint task force or Operation Inherent Resolve," Warren said at a Pentagon briefing from Baghdad.
"This is Turkey and Russia. This is their incident," he said. "Our focus is on ISIL. The US military’s feeling is our mission is to fight ISIL in Syria and Iraq. … That’s what we’re focusing on."
He clarified that forces the US has trained and partnered with in Syria were not in the area

Just read this from the Washington Times....
LINK
I wonder what would happen if a Russian plane were to violate Turkish airspace in an area where instead of Turkish planes, it was U.S. planes patrolling the area. There's got to be some established rules of engagement on this I'd imagine.
And this shows just how complicated and potentially dangerous the whole situation in Syria & Turkey is right now. On the one hand you've got both Russian & American aircraft launching strikes over the same territory in Syria. And on the other hand right next door you've got American aircraft defending Turkish airspace from those same Russian aircraft.
quote:
The U.S. sent F-15C air superiority jets to Turkey to help it patrol and defend its air space. Col. Warren said no F-15 was in the vicinity.

That's a pretty foolish statement from him considering if it ever came to war between Turkey & Russia (which I highly doubt BTW) we'd be treaty bound to come to the aid of Turkey. Per the NATO treaty, and attack on Turkey from anyone is the same as an attack on all NATO members, including the U.S.
Basically what he's saying can be interpreted as saying the U.S will not honor it's NATO obligation. That's not the message that we want to convey to Russia because if it appears to them that NATO might not stand with Turkey, outright war, or at least retaliatory strikes, against Turkey just became a lot more of a plausible move in their eyes.

Russia must have some shitty pilots, shot down by a Turkish pilot...? However, it was an American plane and technology they shot them down with...

Turks are reporting that they believe the two airmen to be alive and are currently in the process of negotiating their release.

Come on now. You're an Air Force guy. You're better than this. You know (or should know) the F-16 is a purpose built fighter made for knocking other aircraft out of the sky. The SU-24 is not a fighter (not to mention much older than the F-16), instead it's an attack aircraft similar to the now retired F-111. It should come as no surprise that any half-way modern fighter, much less an F-16, could shoot it down, even if it is a "watered-down" version.

Don't look okay from this alleged video. Looks like a duck hunt of the parachuting pilots. 25 seconds in:

This is where the media kills me. It was not a fighter that was shot down. There's a huge difference between a fighter and an attack aircraft.
