If we can't get Jimbo Fisher, then I'm not opposed to keeping Les another year.

(ETA: There are reasons to question him - he is a victim of his own early success this season. No one should have expected more than 8 or 9 wins this season with our QB situation and defensive woes - particularly change of DC and almost no linebackers to speak of.)

I just think it's asinine that people could think any other way, even if it means getting a guy like Fedora. It's pretty clear keeping Miles is a certain path to mediocrity from here on out. Yes, a lesser coach wouldn't be a guarantee, but i'll take a risk from what I know what LSU is in for with Miles. That being said, hopefully we get our guy.

One thought is that we don't want our last year with Fournette along with a more experienced Harris to be a "transition year."

Entering a season expecting to win only 8 games, following a season in which you just only won 8 games just might be a fireable offense. How many do you expect to win next year with Miles and Cam running the offense after losing 3 offensive lineman, one wide receiver, and almost no linebackers returning to our defense?

Fire/don't fire either way real problem is all these sources spilling info to press. How does it help for the ESPN lead to be buyout of CLM contract very likely. Make the decision and then hold a press conference appropriately after the A&M game. Really, what if they circle the wagons and dominate A&M? Especially if they've reached out to top choices and don't have a clear taker.

Kirk Ferentz at Iowa. On hot seat for several years. Has Iowa at 10-0. Likely to go 12-0 and play for Big Ten title. If he wins, he has Iowa in the playoff.

This could be LSU and Les Miles next year. Point is, Iowa had patience, kept Ferentz and now he's got them on the cusp of playing for the natty.

Maybe some patience is due here.

How would you like to recruit in Iowa? Gotta suck. He does pretty good, all things considered.

And that might be a fair assessment. He just let his DC go - a DC he was fighting to keep, it appears, and who both bears a good bit of the blame for the current predicament (the defense kept a lot of those early games close, when we were pushing everyone around on defense) AND was almost giddy in sticking the knife into Les' back on the way out. It is ultimately Les' responsibility for hiring Chavis, allowing him to hire/retain Haley, then allowing them to utterly fail in recruiting and development.

That's fair - that's on Les and a big reason he is being let go.

I haven't thought that far ahead - every team has a different vibe and one never knows when a team like 2011 comes together. I'm fairly certain that the 2011 defense and the 2013 offense could have been competitive with handpicked NFL teams - and that is a strong statement, I know.

But, Harris has come along - there is more to work on, but with Harris and Fournette on next year's team, a number of things would have to happen on defense:

Beckwith would have to be convinced to return.

1 or more true freshmen would have to be near-Kwon levels.

Continued improvement in DL play (which I expect with Orgeron)


Now - I'm a certified positiger - my bonafides should be unquestioned. I've defended Miles since the beginning and in this thread.

Miles is done - barring some miracle. That much is obvious. There might even be more than a scintilla of justification for it. But we're talking about a decade long tenured coach, not a guy who has come in - had a honeymoon year, a good year, a great year, then 2 bad years. We're in the middle of a winning, bowl-eligible season - just as every season under Miles, however subjectively disappointing.

1. The team quit in the 2nd half of the Bama game and has shown only the occasional sign of life since - that is 100% on coaching.

2. The coaching staff has no answers. Don't say they haven't tried anything different. We threw the ball 51 times against Ole Miss - since the Bama loss, we've thrown it (or certainly called passes) 2 times to every run, give or take. If we hadn't lost so badly, Ole Miss would be Harris' breakout game as a passer and Fournette had his best all purpose game to date.

3. The defense is a project - there are quality players for the DL, that simply lack experience and development - Godchaux, Lacatoure, and Neal are excellent players - some of the best in the conference. But, there are few backups who can come in without a big drop off. They wear down, easily, too because they are not as big as OL they face. The problem is that recruiting and development are coaching responsibilities - the 2 big culprits for our current situation (Chavis and Haley) are gone, but the damage is done.

4. Injuries on the OL (and I count the TEs and JDM in that broad grouping - the "blockers") have DESTROYED the chemistry of that unit. The fact we have such poorly developed depth is 100% on coaching - our HC is a former OL - no excuse for Miles on this one.

5. Lost in the 3-game losing streak is encouraging improvement from the ST unit - I think they had their best game @ Oxford - this demonstrates some successful coaching going on by the least regarded member of the staff - BDP. May be too little, too late, but hard to hang these losses on the ST unit - Harris interceptions seem to have shifted the momentum to the opponent at the crucial time in 2 of the games.


While I regret the decision, and believe it to have been in haste, we're stuck with it now - almost impossible not to part ways with Miles due to the way this has been handled.

Now that it is done, LSU fans, with some inflated (unsupportable) sense of self-importance think we're going to get:

Gruden

Chip Kelly

Jack Del Rio

Jimbo Fisher

or, maybe, Dan Mullen

When, in actuality, the hire is going to be Fuentes, Herman or Klingsbury - or a coach of that level.

Alleva will pay them $2 to $2.5 million and call it a win, while paying Miles $15 million (booster money) to not coach for 8 years.

This was poorly thought out - poorly planned and is being poorly executed. Forgive me if I'm not optimistic about how it will turn out at this point.
