We are going to Costa Rica for Thanksgiving and have At&t as our service. What should we do in order to still have access to the phone? I'm sure I can get AT&T to add an international package for a few days for $20 or so, but is there anything that will keep my costs down? Can I make calls using WhatsApp? Please help, rookie international traveler here!

Yes, AT&T will let you put international on your account for the month, just remember to cancel it when you get home. If you have wifi, then WhatsApp will work. My father in law used it to keep in touch with us when he went to Japan and it worked fine.

I used the Talkatone app once to call my Dad mainly to see if it worked well...it did. We got lucky though and the hotel we stayed at for the beginning and end of our trip offered free international calls so we just called our parents from the hotel to let them know we arrived safely.
Also kept my phone on airplane mode the entire trip and only used wifi.
I did have a friend go to CR and she just used her phone like she normally would....yeah she got a $300 phone bill the next month.
