There are contexts where it is appropriate. I assume you and your buddies are just trying to get a feel for the market, and you feel comfortable with each other to talk about it. Maybe you give advice to each other. I have some friends with whom I do this. But acting like some people wouldn't frame this sort of discussion as a way to show that they are better people, more successful in life, and better providers for their families is plain ignorant.
And LOL at acting like this has anything to do with PC/SJW. It's simple manners to try to recognize people's comfort level with you.
