You can have every advantage in the world and no matter who your AD is you can make the wrong hire.
Look at Texas right now.
Look at what Tenn has gone through.
Look at some of the hires made at Fla.
LSU is not immune to a bad coaching hire.
When Saban leaves Bama, they are not immune to a bad coaching hire. Look at the parade of coaches Bama has been through and only two of them, Stallings and Saban, have really panned out.
LSU made the best hire the athletic department or Emmert ever made in Saban and Bertman made a solid hire in Miles to replace him. Look at who Emmert hired at Washington, he was not so lucky and that program has suffered for ten plus years now.

I don't think it makes sense to excuse Trent Johnson. His resume doesn't change that it was a bad hire. In fact, anyone can hire off of a resume. Real ability to make good hires is to be able to look beyond the resume.

Caldwell and Trent both lack something EXTREMELY fundamental in college athletics...the ability to recruit successfully. That's a huge mistake to not figure that out during the hiring process.

Beth Torina has been a tremendous hire. And, Johnny Jones is basically the opposite of a resume hire. The jury is still out, but it's looking like a good hire that could be viewed as a great hire based on the trajectory of the program.
