There's got to be some deal behind the scenes. I don't get why they went with Cloud either besides the cool factor. I don't think anyone ever saw him as an option anymore than Master Chief.

Why exactly? Ryu didn't result in anything. Snake didn't result in anything. Cloud is a iconic character and I'm sure Nintendo did everything they could to get him in the game.

I am with you. This is nothing but them putting a highly popular character into a highly popular game. It is a win/win/win for all parties.

Square wins for free advertisement for upcoming FF7 remake and whatever they got for allowing it.

Nintendo wins for sales of DLC.

Sony wins for getting free advertisement for FF7 remake.

Ryu is still in Nintendo games and Snake started here. The thing is FFVII was Nintendo's biggest missed opportunity ever as far as a single game is concerned. If Cloud can get in Smash, now everyone is on the table. Master Chief, Crash Bandicoot, Kratos, Sly Cooper, etc are now all true possibilities for the next Smash. They've truly opened the floodgates for anyone.

I totally agree with you. Everyone on Reddit was saying the same thing as this board. "This confirms a Final Fantasy game must be coming to the Wii U or NX!"

Why?? Nintendo just wants as many iconic video game characters embedded in gaming culture as possible in their game to grow its audience. And the company "lending" their character to Smash gets free advertising for their IP. It's win-win for both parties and a good move for Square Enix given their recently announced FF VII HD remake.

And the reason they didn't pick some other FF character more complimentary to a fighting game is because only FF fans know who those characters are. Almost everyone familiar with video games knows who Cloud is, even if they never played FF VII or ANY FF game for that matter.
