How is this gun out to say 150 yards? Pros/Cons?

Bonescanner, Congrats on taking your son deer hunting. As far as "starter" guns go, it'd be hard to beat the 7-08. It's fine to 150 yards and well beyond that. If you can find them, there are also reduced recoil loads available. The only potential con is availabiity of ammo. I always thought 7-08 ammo would be as available as anything else nowadays, but that's NOT the case. After I bought a 7-08 XP-100 handgun a few years ago I started looking for factory ammo so I could reload the brass (couldn't find ANY brass anywhere). That's when I found that some Wal-Mart's (including mine) do NOT stock the 7-08. I've only hunted w/ my 7-08 for 2 seasons, but it's already a favorite of mine. At the range, be sure your son uses ear plugs + ear muffs. Be sure the gun has a nice recoil pad. Consider placing a small sand bag between butt pad and shoulder for long shooting sessions.
