Why do teams try to center the ball before a final FG attempt?

I understand it gives you room for error to both the left and the right, but you would think a kicker would rather it on one hash or the other given a natural draw or fade.
I heard an analyst mention this a few weeks ago after the missed XPs in the NFL this year, it may have been Herm Edwards on the radio, but I can't say for sure. Anyway, he said that kickers were putting the ball in the middle of the field like they did on traditional XPs because it is damn near impossible to miss an XP in the NFL on the 3 yard line. However, now that they've backed it up, he said kickers should have been choosing one hash or the other instead of the middle of the field.
I'd imagine that coaches consult with their kicker before they do it, but I hardly ever see a coach put it anywhere other than the center of the field.

They usually ask kickers where they want the ball.
I'm sure the kicker knows where he wants to kick from better than anyone.

As a former kicker, I can attest that as you got farther back 30+ yards, it is much more natural to kick from a hash. Some of the most difficult kicks were from dead center. I always liked the left hash and aimed for the right upright and it would hook dead center.

I'm sure you have a better idea of where kickers would like the ball placed than the coaches of said kickers.
And they don't always center it.

Reminds me of a high school game I was working. After the kicker missed an extra point wide left, a member of the chain crew told me that the ball naturally goes that way on every kick. I asked why they don't put the ball on the right hash every time. He didn't know that was an option.
