If the college football championship was done like the heavyweight boxing championship, where whoever beats the current champion because champion, LSU would be it. Tracing all the way back to the first football game in 1869, where Rutgers beat Princeton 6-4.
In the case of ties the champion retains their championship.

The only thing I don't like about that (related to LSU, anyway) is that we let Rice be "Champion".

But wouldnt Kentucky have taken it from us and given it to whoever they played next?
No, because Auburn took it from Florida, then we took it from Auburn after we lost to Kentucky. Its nice how that works out, isn't it?

What about when we beat UF in 1997?
Florida wasn't the current victory chain champion.
What can happen is sometimes a good team will be upset by a lesser team, and if its a conference that schedules a lot of patty cakes, then the victory chain championship gets kicked around within the conference for a while before a more deserving team gets a chance to play for it.

Damn if that were the case who would have USC 2003 AP trophy?

No, Georgia would have it.
Kentucky beat us
next week florida beat kentucky
next week georgia beat florida and have not lost since,
so Georgia is the champion.

We weren't the holders of it when Kentucky beat us. The only way to win the Spinella Trophy is to beat the current holder of it. When we lost to Kentucky, Auburn was holding the Spinella Trophy because they took it from Florida when they beat them.

Awesome. I love it!
Wait ... unless ... this is part of some left-wing communist conspiracy because I can't understand it all!!! In the immortal words of GMB:

No, because under his system we would not have won it until we beat Auburn, which was after the Kentucky game.
