So yea, if we had had a different version of Saban than the one we actually had, one who was fully dedicated to being the coach at LSU, that hypothetical coach might have been the greatest coach in LSU history. The version we actually had one eye towards the NFL the whole time and it showed in his performance as a coach and negatively impacted recruiting.

you mean the one who took us from 3-4 wins seasons to a national championship?

Gerry DiNardo went 24-9-1 in his first three seasons with Carl Reese as his DC. Reese bolted for Texas, DiNardo hired Tepper, and the rest is history. We were a dumpster program when DiNardo took over. By the time Saban got here, we were a prominent program in need of some tune-ups.

He had one really great year that included a double digit home loss to UF. He had another really good year when an LSU team full of Dinardo players was able make it to the SEC Championship Game despite 3 losses.

Saban has been much, much better at Alabama than he was at LSU, and this really shouldn't be that big of a debate.

He's had one double digit regular season loss in 9 years at Alabama.
He had at least one per season at LSU.

In his first 5 years at Alabama, he had 2 undefeated regular seasons and 3/5 seasons with 1 or fewer losses.
At LSU, he had zero undefeated, 1/5 seasons with 1 or fewer losses.

1996 . Gerry DiNardo . 10-2
1997 . Gerry DiNardo . . 9-3

Wow, look at that. Saban had only ONE year in FIVE in which he had less losses than DiNardo.

Wow.

Saban did not build a mansion. He inherited a mansion. Saban won with DiNardo's players. Saban also recruited and those players became Miles' players. BUT Saban's record with DiNardo's players was marginally, if any, better than Saban's record with his own players.

One quick note: QB is the most important position in football. A team is seriously handicapped without a quality QB.

Flynn signed in February 2002.
Russell signed in February 2003.

Who did Saban sign as the LSU QB in February 2004?

Who did Saban have committed as the LSU QB for February 2005?

All the respect for Saban in the world. He was a major reason our program RESURFACED, and that 2003 team was special. That said, his second best year out of 5 years at LSU ended with 3 losses. Some people get confused and think Saban won big every year. He is a great coach. So is Les Miles. They do it different ways. If you still love Nick Saban, by all means, I don't think anyone will miss you as an LSU fan...in fact.....don't let the door hit you in the arse.
