People think that because the 20 year old ones are still on the road that the current models will achieve the same long term quality and dependability
And they pay handsomely for that assumption

Perception is reality.
All manufacturers tolerate a certain amount of failure from their suppliers. Toyota upped the tolerance (and got lower prices) from their suppliers a few years ago and their quality is about the same as Ford and GM.
The general public, believing what they learned in the 90's is still valid, tolerates dated interiors and older engine tech to get that "quality".
