I just think it's silly that when the BCS was created, it was largely due to the sentiment that people shouldn't chose who the champion was. But ever since 2003-04, people have been gradually regaining the influence to the point that we're now back in the same situation as we were prior to the BCS.
Surely you're not serious. The prior system before the BCS was automatic conference/bowl tie-ins where the top teams rarely played each other. And the "national champion" was decided by silly voter polls, which are horribly flawed.
The BCS was a little better because it at least guaranteed the "top" two teams would actually play. The BCS formula was still too heavily driven by voter polls (2/3, I believe). Computer rankings (1/3 of the BCS formula) are ok in theory, but humans program the computers with the criteria they want.
Expanding to 4 teams and using a committee to decide seems much better to me (although I'd much prefer an 8 team playoff). It's similar to the March Madness selection committee, which generally does a good job and is thorough and takes their job seriously.
Media polls are a joke, and people fill those things out in 5 minutes with very little thought or justification. Coaches' polls are even worse.
At least the committee has some semblance of seriousness of purpose and spends a lot of time analyzing and discussing. I'll take this current process over the BCS, or the prior poll system, any day of the week.

And once the formula was figured out for a few of the computer formulas, teams started adjusting their schedules & running up scores against weaker opponents to fudge the numbers.

You don't think they are influenced by pre season polls? They watch the games like we do and see the rankings. They all also have ties to teams. This is not better than the bcs. In fact remember when usc got left out? They went to scheduling harder ooc games and went from playing 11 games to 12. They did the exact opposite of what you said.
These people have full time jobs. I barely have enough time to watch 1 football game a week, how are these people supposed to watch every team play? They don't, its a freaking joke.
