As far back as 2002 it was all debate format

All the NFL shows were Sean Salisbury vs the "crypt keeper"
All CFB shows were Trev Alberts vs. anyone
It started in the late 90s because fox had a show called "the best damn sports show period" it's where Stephen a smith got his start in national sports television as well as Michael Irvin and a few others. It pulled really good ratings for a late night sports program, and ESPN started copying them, and even pulled talent from that show.

pti was a great show the first few shows. espn's downfall can be traced to 1) claiming the 2003 national title for usc and 2) hiring stephen a smith.
