Red's Chinese has gotten very good, as of late. I live nearby (nah - not a hipster) and went there about 2 weeks after it opened. Was bad - so damn spicy hot it was almost inedible (and, I typically like spicy foods). Waited 2 months and gave it another chance. have been there about 5 times since, and its good. But, if your dining in (I usually do take-out) its typically hot inside of the place, and the wait staff is very hipsterish.
I read some initial articles where Tobias claimed to be friends with Danny Bowien (founder of Mission Chinese), but then I saw later that Tobias was fired from Mission Chinese NY after 6 months. I wonder whether Danny okay'd the opening of a Mission knockoff in New Orleans, but I am guessing not based on Tobias' answer in recent article:

How much of what you do at Red's Chinese do you owe to Mission Chinese Food?
The bottom line is: Does it taste good. At a lot of fusion restaurants, the menu reads well in print, but the execution is stupid. It's too f-ed with. Or it's not enough food. I want to be busy and cooking. I don't want to be a slow restaurant and only have people who can afford it.
Not a great answer. I think it's crappy if he did not get an okay from the Mission Chinese founder. I have not looked in a while, but his initial menu was supposedly 'inspired' by Mission, but was closer to a straight copy with a couple local ingredients changed to fit New Orleans.

Ehhh, there have basically been a lot of similar restaurants and dishes that have been copied or cribbed across the country over the last few years.
Basically most new restaurants in last few years have been either pan-ethnic, Vaguely Asian, lardcore, farm to table or some other bullshite.
