30 to 40 defense isn't much. I have 150+ in most and I had 700 at spectacle Island for shits and giggles.

quote:

just mass death everywhere
You sure you aren't killing them?

I played well over and I do mean well over 200 hours on the first play through and I killed Ma Finch and I only saw 2 dead settlers the rest of the game and they died when I didn't show up for an attack.

So are you skipping the attacks? I've never seen someone die when showing up for an attack unless they walked in front of my maxed out weapons. Ma Finch stepped right in front of me blazing away with a maxed Kellog's .44

Also might be a good idea to give your defenders better weapons.

The first 5 to 7 defenders I set up, I give them maxed weapons or take their crappy pistols and max them out.

For those that don't want to take the time and parts to do this, there is a mod that gives you better settlers. There is a chance they will spawn with good weapons and armor.

I helped a settlement of mine defend against super mutants, personally witnesses a settler take a missile to the face without dying. In fact, she grabbed a minigun from a dead mutant and went to town.

I'm only lvl 23 which is why defense #'s are so low. 2nd playthru (king of).

But yeah, I've dead settlers and/or traveling caravan defenders when I show up late or midway thru the battle. I guess I could be killing them when using explosives or explosive rounds

I just don't get why they don't hide or defend the settlements instead of running out of the gates or walls I have built. Makes 0 sense
