Anyone have a preferred program or can I use just any old video editing/creation software? I'm a complete first timer and want to give it a shot.

Dumb question but wanting to do this more with my kids getting older. Would I be able to use this application with the new Surface Book? Would it benefit me at all to get the new integrated GPU for an app like this?

Honestly for video editing, get a Mac and Final Cut Pro X. Its the best and the easiest. But if thats not an option, I used Pinnacle Studio when I had a PC. People like Adobe Premiere Pro but that is a little more expensive and complex.

If you have a mac then it comes with iMovie which is really good and intuitive for home movie editing.

I'm not sure how the Microsoft product is (Movie Maker) but I"m sure it has caught up to iMovie by now. I'd give that a try and see if it does what you need. I think my wife said it didn't support .mov videos from her iPhone. She always uses my mac to edit her videos.

I've used paid versions of Final Cut Pro X (mac), Adobe Premiere, and Vegas Pro. I actually liked Adobe a lot but it was on a more powerful PC with big monitors and lots of plugins, where as Final Cut was on a laptop. All 3 were good, it just depends on what you are used to.

Best free video editing software: 20 top programs in 2015

This review was released 9 days ago, so it's very up-to-date.

First one out the block is Windows Movie Maker.

I recently dove into this as I have to send a coach training videos. So I tried movie maker since it was free, and it always crashed on me. It was miserable. I tried out a few more and I landed on VideoPad Video Editor. Works great.
