As long as you're not an a-hole you'll be fine.
Same thing when it comes to tailgaters. I've been at tailgates where we gave food to some Falcons fans.
With it being a night game there are many places you can go beforehand. Maybe get a poboy from somewhere like Killer po boys. Then you can head to walk-ons near the stadium, that'll have a crowd. Champions square too. Everything will be close by, and you'll have no trouble finding Atlanta fans .
Stubhub/ticket exchange will work just fine and you'll likely find a ticket for cheap

I am staying on Canal and Decatur. Would walking down Poydras be the normal way to the dome? Would taking a cab be smarter?

I have always found making friends with opposing fans as the smartest way to experience an away game (at least at the college level). I usually keep my falcons apparel to wearing a hat anyway
ETA: I forgot to ask, if you were going to be going to a game in the Dome and sitting by yourself where would you normally try to get a seat? Pay for a sideline lower bowl? Just pay to get in the building? Not having to pay for a ticket for my wife makes this abnormally cheaper than I am used to
