Could Spurrier have landed at LSU in past other than 1987?

This may have been covered and i know we missed on him when we took Archer and pissed him off, but was he ever in the running any of the other years when we needed a change? looks like there were other opportunities and just wondering if 87 was our 1 chance or were there others? thanks

So he was on the table when we got Les and he went to SC?

There was no chance to get him in 2005. He was already at USC by the end of November

thanks, he sure gave them one hell of a ride, not that we havent had one ourselves, but i wonder what he could have done with a stronger program?

Saban ended in 04 at LSU, Spurrier in 03 at Washington. So yes there was a chance he could have been Saban's successor.

Forgot about that. I thought I remembered talks between LSU and Spurrier but apparently that was the voices in my head.

Saban fricked us by not announcing that he was leaving earlier. We would have gotten Spurrier

In hindsight after Arns left LSU should have hired him, but at the time it would have been a risk. Any way it is what is it. Obviously Archer as a DC, turned out to be a bigger gamble which LSU lost. At that time not thinking about championships just to continue winning and going to bowl games.

No could really blame LSU for not hiring Spurrier in '87. He was still basically unproven. He had been head coach for a USFL team but don't think he was all that successful. LSU did what they thought was the best thing in hiring Archer, who Arnsparger recommended. Besides if we had gotten him in
87 he would have bolted for UF in '90 anyway.
