OT Mechanics...question about brakes.

Do the back tire breaks wear down faster on a car with rear wheel drive? Car has rear wheel drive, and back brakes are squeaking a bit, but not the front.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Front brakes wear fast almost 100% of the time since they do most of the work.
Not to say that some rear brakes (especially those baby discs) don't wear fast.
If you have rear drums, they will normally last two front brake jobs before you have to change the shoes in the back.

In general no.
Are your rear brakes disk or drum?
Although pad wear indicators do cause a squealing when the brake pads get low, not all squeaking is indicative of low pads.
Newer pads tend to glaze over and cause some degree of squeaking.

And no...the fronts will wear about twice as fast as the rears as long as you're proportioning valve is working correctly.

Nothing to do with the proportioning valve as much as simple physics. Weight transfers towards the front during braking, front brakes have to handle 80% of the effort in stopping the vehicle which is why they use larger, thicker rotors and pads up front to help manage the thermal load.

On a lot of newer vehicles, the rear brakes wear out faster than the front. Weird, but apparently that's how they design them now.

RWD traction control FTW

That's probably more to do with bad drivers but even with modern 4-channel ABS/TCS you should get way more life out of the rear pads than the front. Think the rear pads on my truck went about 135k miles and still had life when I changed them.

Fronts always wear faster
