Gladbach just tweeted that Fab is back in Germany and is being treated for a thigh injury.

I can see both sides of it. When you get into the 2nd period of ET, you have to start planning for PK's. Saving the last sub for Rimando is a pretty solid plan. He has like a 40% save rate on PK's, which is incredible for a keeper.
Side note, Guzan is a great shot stopper, but there is a huge difference between PK's and shots in normal play.
I find that perfectly reasonable.
What I don't like, is Fabs bringing himself off 9 MINUTES before PK's. He seriously couldn't tough it out for 9 MINUTES?! It should be a damn honor to play for the USA, and he couldn't tough it out.
8 other players were out there just as long, and stayed on for the full time. When its that close to PK's, and you know he is saving the last sub, you have to tough it out, regardless of injury. The 8 others probably had muscle tightness or knocks too, but they didn't pull themselves off.
I don't like Klinsmann, but this is definitely the right call from him. National Teams have to have pride, and Fabs apparently doesn't.

We're those 8 others just coming back from injury as well? I don't think he was in any shape to play 120 minutes. In 2 of his last 3 league games since coming back from injury, he only played 59 and 69 minutes.

But but Jurgen wouldn't lie would he?

He's saved 40% while playing in MLS. In a game where we have numerous guys struggling to make it to the end, you can't save a sub for a keeper.

I would also consider this game to be less important that a WCQ match, which starts next month by the way.

In these types of games, it happens all the time.
If Johnson felt he couldn't go the length, he should have pulled himself after 90, not with 9 minutes left in ET. At that point, we had only used 1 sub, and would have been perfectly reasonable.
and just FYI, yes, there were multiple others coming off injuries who went the distance. Beasley and Jones in particular.

I wonder how much of an impact a guy like Danny Williams could have had as a second half sub.

This game was a gillion times more important than a WCQ against Trinidad and Tobago in the fourth round of Concacaf qualifying.

Really? How often do teams sub on a keeper in the last few minutes?

Jones has been played every week since April.

I strongly disagree. From the minute we are knocked out of the WC, all of our attention should be towards making the next WC. The only way to get there is through qualifying.

we will never be tested in the semifinal qualifying round.

Weren't we in danger of not making it out of this round last time?
Just looked it up and yes we were. We finished with 13 points while 2nd and 3rd finished with 10. It was still in extreme doubt going into the last two games.

If I remember correctly, we lost some matches early that kind of put it in doubt, but rebounded and didn't struggle in the later matches. I could be wrong, so pardon me that's the case.
Qualifying for the Confederations Cup was literally the goal of the entire year of 2015 for this team. Not Defeating Trinidad and Tobago in the only WCQ of the year.

When you have a PK specialist on the bench in the 2nd half of ET, it happens all the time. Netherlands did it twice in the last world cup.
It is a VERY commmon strategy in knockout style tournaments. It doesn't happen in league matches, because duh, there aren't PK's.

In our 2nd to last game in that round we needed a 90th minute winner from GAM to win at Antigua and Barbuda. And we were tied with Guatemala at 10 points before beating them in the final game.
ETA: Looking back at it more, going into that 5th game against A&B, we were tied at 7 points with both Jamaica and Guatemala. So, yes, we were very much in a battle at that point.

And I wouldn't call a 5'10" GK a PK specialist. I would take both Guzan and Howard over Rimando in a shootout.

Outside of Van Gaal in this past tournament, when else has it happened?

What about a 5'10" GK with 38% PK save rate?
As opposed to 14% in Tim Howard?
Or 33% in Brad Guzan
I'd take Rimando in a PK shootout all day.
