From what i was told, Spurrier wanted the LSU head coaching position and LSU completely ignored him (not sure the year)n and he enjoyed reminding LSU of this. Anyone else hear this?

Been rehashed a million times.

At the time, Spurrier was a gimmicky coach from the margins (Duke, the USFL etc), and Archer was the defensive coordinator under Arnsparger, who was considered the best defensive-minded coach we ever had. Similar to Muschamp under Saban, or possibly Smart at Bama now.
fwiw, Archer did go 10-1-1 his first season; he just couldn't run a program.
