Yes, that's exactly what he should have said. He could have thanked everyone who made plans on such short notice and that he expects a great walk-up and there is still time to buy tickets to see a great SEC matchup.
Now, to be fair, I only saw the pulled quotes but this has an "I'm disappointed in our fans" tone and I don't think it's fair. It sure as hell isn't motivating.

And then he'd get blasted here for "being too nice to USC" and "looking like an idiot for expecting a great crowd on such short notice".
