A sapphire crystal doesn't stop scratches completely. And they have a thin film on them to stop glare. That gets scratched up a little too.

Well according to the Mohs index: sapphire crystal is rated at a 9 (diamond is 10); thus in theory, the only harder material the can scratch another softer material. So there are not a lot of everyday things that could scratch sapphire... in theory.
