Obviously you have no status with anyone. It does help in situations like this.

If you booked through the hotel, you're fine either way.

I also have a companion pass and A+ preffered status with SW. Used to work in the big 4, so I know plenty about travelling and canceling hotels

Marriots policy is 24 hours before and even up to 6pm same day sometimes. I know because I've had to do it countless times.

But congrats on your status for letting you do something any can do

From an email from Marriott:

quote:

You may cancel your reservation for no charge until Saturday, August 8, 2015 (1 day[s] before arrival).

Please note that we will assess a fee of 218.93 CAD if you must cancel after this deadline.

If you have made a prepayment, we will retain all or part of your prepayment. If not, we will charge your credit card.

So no, your status with marriott didn't help at all

You do realize this wasn't a normal weekend in Columbia, and hotels often have these policies in place. Well, I guess you actually don't.

Big 4... oooo that explains it all.

I was scheduled to day in Charleston tomorrow night. Please review that Marriott property's policy:

My Marriott in Syracuse two weeks ago was 7 days before arrival. Fairfield Inn in Auburn last year was 31 days before arrival. My JW Marriott in Houston last week was 3 days before arrival.

I can keep going...but cancellation policies will vary based on the hotel, rate booked, special event clauses, or occupancy rate.
