Hotels can't charge you until you stay. You are well within the 48 hour window to cancel hotel penalty.
Great example of southwest being a great personal airline. I fly others when flying business, but southwest is perfect for situations like these.

Unless they did the cheaper advance purchase rate that many of them do that allows no refunds.

I'm Platinum Premier with Marriott, they would have refunded me either way so I wasn't worried about it. But they technically didn't have to refund anything.

I've been in Hotel Operations for over 15 years, and that is not true. A Hotel often has various policies based on an event, time of year, etc. As long as the policy is clearly stated, they can actually charge full amount whenever the policy states.
Having said that, most hotels will be more than willing to reverse the charge, especially if the room will not sit empty. In this case, seems they need the rooms for help anyway.
