Why do you think there should be some harsh penalty for something with so much chance involved? It is by far the harshest penalty in the game, far more harsh than any other. A guy can rip an opponent's helmet off and punch him in the face, and it doesn't hurt the team as much as a fumble that the defense couldn't even manage to recover.

"That just happens to be it" is an acceptable answer to you? Twenty yards is a LOT of field position. There is no justification, no rhyme or reason. It's just a freebie 20 yards in a game where you're supposed to earn every inch. It just doesn't sit right.
