That was my thought as well. In a pinch, he could toss him to zombies as a distraction. The whole, you don't have to outurn the bear. You just have to outrun the ohter guy" mentality.

I think because Strand has something far more grand (and possibly sinister) planned and he needs a lackey who will be loyal to him and carry out some of the dirty work.
He chose him because being a drug addict, Nick could be controlled easily and I'm curious how this relationship will play out in Season 2
