The Good Ole Boy Network is Killing this Team

I'm not one to throw CSP (or for that matter, Loomis) under the bus all the time.
But this is a problem that has persisted for years. Years and years,
CSP has his buddies at positional coaching jobs, and he refuses to fire them.
Joe Vitt, Bill Johnson, Greg McMahon.
There may be others.
These guys have been turning out shite for years.
When's the last time our ST has been even average?
When have we last developed a linebacker worth a shite?
Why do our DL players seem to regress?
Of all the problems I have with CSP, this is the most infuriating to me.
Stop this cronyism bullshite and hire some respectable position coaches.
Your drafting wouldn't look so shitty if you could actually develop players instead of making them worse.

If hoodoo is melting down there's no hope for the rest of us

Payton's staff have too much dirt on him so he is scared to fire them.

I'm with you on every single point you make here, Hoodoo.
I don't even think Rob is as big of a problem as the specialized defensive coaches.
Those guys having the dirt on Payton/staying loyal and keeping their mouths shut through the bountygate saga has earned them a permanent spot.
It's really ironic when you think about how comfortable Payton was with cleaning house when he arrived in '06.

I agree with your sentiment. Poor coaching and talent evaluation on defense has been a yoke around our necks since CSP got here. That said, I think Loomis and CSP kept the nucleus of a championship caliber team together for nearly 10 years before the cap finally caught up with us. That's not too shabby. 2 NFC championship game appearances, a Super Bowl win, and 5 trips to the playoffs in 9 years isn't bad.
2010 we were bitten by injuries. 2011 was our year, but we shite the bed in SF, we all know what happened in 2012, and we never really recovered. Last year, we were a Super Bowl team on paper and went all in with the Byrd signing until that blew up in our faces too. Now we are old and need to rebuild.
We simply didn't draft/develop well enough to go on a Pittsburg/New England type run, but I'm not mad because those types of runs are the exception. It's time to face facts and start thinking about the future, but I will not shite on Brees and CSP over this.

I think Payton took some needed steps with overhauling the scouting department, and so far this draft has looked like it'll be one of our better ones, but I agree, it hasn't gone far enough.
He's shaken things up on the margins without really addressing his sacred cows.
Ask yourself this: If McMahon, Johnson or Vitt is fired today, do you think any of them are hired by another NFL team?

They All Need To Go Time For A NEW Regime

The aura around Payton and Loomis has really worn off. I defended Loomis for a long time because even though common knowledge said Saints were in "salary cap hell," he always found a way to sign free agents and stay under. Now, I'm on a completely different end of the spectrum.
Since I've had more time to look objectively at his work post-2009 it's been really shocking. The drafting is the biggest and most obvious failure and that falls on him and Payton, but outside of that he hasn't ever taken a balanced approach to free agency and extending his own players. For example, look at the biggest additions from FA class of 2012...
Curtis Lofton - 5 yrs/$27.5 mil
Ben Grubbs - 5 yrs/$36 mil
Brodrick Bunkley - 5 yrs/$25 mil
David Hawthorne - 5 yrs/$19 mil
What's amazing is these guys are taking up just about $17 million in cap space THIS YEAR. Three aren't on the team any longer and Hawthorne has only been starting because of Ellerbe's injury. It's one thing to fail in a draft class where you miss one a handful of cheap, mostly unknown players, but it's an entirely different thing to fail in a free agent class where the players are proven commodities that you're investing over $100 million in over the next five years.
Then let's look at his recent player contract extensions...
Jimmy Graham - 4 yrs/$40 mil ($20.9 mil guaranteed)
Junior Galette - 4 yrs/$41.5 mil ($23 mil guaranteed)
Zach Streif - 5 yrs/$20 mil (age 31 at signing)
Jimmy and Junior have already been discussed at length. I have nothing to add there. It's clear why they were bad deals. Strief on the other hand is a little different. He is/was (you decide) a good player, but you don't commit $20 million over five years to a guy who is already 31, especially when the next year you draft his replacement in the first round. It's almost as foolish as dumping a bunch of money into your already stable and inexpensive running back corps! Oh wait...
It's pretty clear that Benson has lost his marbles because if he knew what the hell was going on, he would have fired Mickey Loomis by now.

I agree. Morstead, although a little off this year, has transcended the incompetence that is McMahon as did Sproles, but the rest is a shite show. Murphy is a bright spot!
Vitt has done absolutely nothing except watch Vilma and Fujita along with a serviceable Shanley wreck shop while he squinted behind those thick glasses and upturned fart smell face.
Johnson is another asshat, more inclined to shovel donuts in his mouth than teach technique and get production out of his talent.
Ryan has his issues but he is calling a defense hobbled by injuries and total moron position coaches.
