the opportunity cost to be there was covered when he paid tuition or earned a scholarship.

But a huge part of that value for an athlete in a professional team sport hinges on maximizing the value of others who are playing that sport as well. Therefore, there should be a strong desire to ensure the continued maximization of the collective value. I'd argue Fournette's present value is best maximized by the present system in place. I've yet to see a good argument that would show upending that system would create something of greater value in the present or the long run.
